The Mutsy Stroller Review...

Thursday, December 29, 2016

I have recently been using the Mutsy Igo stroller for miss Apple. I wanted to get a feel for the product prior to writing my review. This was the first I had owned or used the Mutsy brand.

Mutsy is a brand from the Netherlands that has been around for many, many years. Check out their website (HERE) and you will see the first design created in 1937. They are currently offering three styles of strollers. the Igo as shown below as their luxury model, the Evo and the Nexo as their compact design.

I have the Igo in the Pure fabric.

One of the first things that was different than many brands of strollers I have used and own is the fact this folds all in one! And neatly compact. Weighing just over 19 pounds complete the stroller is manageable getting in and out of the trunk of the car. The premium feeling leather wrapped push handle and removable baby bumper bar add luxury and are on trend. I love this look!!

At first I felt the push to be different feeling compared to what I am used to but not long into use of the stroller I got used to it. It has a sturdy weighted feel. Many men like that solid stroller feel.

The Pure edition fabric comes with 100% cotton lining and 100% recycled PEET fabric. Making it a great choice for consumers conscious of the environment and for parents wanting the cotton that is more comfortable for baby.

The sleek look and design has modern industrial welded metal frame.

Easy access basket.

Additional add on basket that can be clipped off and used with it's own carry handle. Great for shopping or the farmers market.

Height adjustable straps for child with 5 point harness.

Parent facing option. Seat removes and can be flipped rear facing.

Recline for baby with proper extended foot rest.

Zipper on hood unzips for added sun coverage.

Beautiful styling and premium fabric. Peek a boo window on hood.

Thoughtfully designed mesh and strap when using the peek a boo window.

Padded cotton fabric makes the seat extra comfortable.

Large easy to use handle for seat recline and stroller folding. I love this!

Built in suspension and no flat tires.

Compact fold with seat attached.

Overview of folded stroller with seat attached.
note : seat must be facing out to fold complete.

Overall I have been enjoying the Mutsy Igo. I love that it goes in and out of the car so simply. The features, fabrics and accessories are great!

Specs :

Suitable from Birth to 45 pounds
Quick fold with seat attached
Reversible seat
Front wheel suspension for extra smooth ride

If you are looking for a compact version check out the Nexo. It is perfect for everyday use and very compact for small cars and travel.

My Christmas gift picks for Apple...

Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Here are a few of my favourite things that I have chosen for miss Apple this year! Buying for a near one year old can be challenging. (Ok, challenging in the sense I want to buy her all clothes and she won't appreciate that until she is a teen!)

(Click the photos to find out more and to purchase)

My top pick is the Joovy Tricycoo! I love this little bike. We already set ours up and the boys took Apple for a test spin. (she won't remember she saw it already! haha!) It has a great sun shade and easy push handle for the parent. Once your child is older it converts to a simple tricycle.

The perfect foam chair by Monte Design. When I owned my shop these were always a top customer pick for Christmas and birthday gifts! Not your old ugly shag chair that you see around. These modern and clean design kids chairs suit your home beautifully and are super durable.

Maileg toys are so dreamy! I love the little clothing and how you can collect them. I plan on building up Apple's stash so when she is a few years old and we invest in a doll house she will have the best Maileg collection. I got mine at www.alittlebundle.com

I am guessing Apple should be walking near Christmas and knew the boys favourite thing when they learned to walk was pull toys. This one by Plan Toys is super cute!

Blabla dolls are my favorite to collect for my littles. They are the perfect plush to have in the crib and look so cute in their room. Kingsley still has his dolls we bought from when he was little.

We already own this Kidkraft white kitchen. It is one of Apple's favorite things to play with in our house! I get asked what brand and where to buy every time we show it. I linked it to Amazon which usually has the best prices. It also comes in pink if you want something really girly. (We did white because Kingsley wanted to play with it.)

I don't believe in toys having a gender attached to them. My big boys played with dolls and kitchen sets and I will for sure be getting Apple trucks and cars! I bought this track for Kaeden years ago and it was the best! The price is great on it too!

Ok, so this one is more for me! I want it for her nursery! I just love the look and it can be a ride on play item. Land of Nod has so many dreamy toys. (We asked Grandma and Grandpa for this one.)

I love this lion so much I had to add it to the list. I think it is the cutest ride on rocker ever! Although we are maxed out on her Chrsitmas gifts I may need to snag for her first birthday. Another Land of Nod amazingly cute toy!

We recently were at a family members house and Apple played AND played with this dino toy! The top pops the balls off and she loved catching them and placing them back on. The price is reasonable too! A great gift for under 20.00

 Kleynimals Rattle
The Kleynimals rattle is something we own but I put it on our list because it is a favorite. The metal chimes perfectly and I think she likes it extra because she thinks it isn't a real toy. It is more like something mommy usually takes away.

We just discovered these tiny dolls. Apple already got the mini baby and I plan to add a couple so she has a little baby collection. They are adorable little dolls by Carolle. They also have tiny outfits available including a bunny suit!

This nifty ball pit design is great! It turns into a trampoline when your little one is older. Apple tried it out last weekend at a Santa event and loved playing in the balls. I know from experience with the boys they love the trampoline too. (Made by Smart Trike who also has a great baby-toddler push trike- linked HERE)

Amorini Silver Nipple Soothers for Breastfeeding...

Monday, November 28, 2016

I have the Amorini Silver Nipple Soothers on my "Item's worth buying postpartum" list. They were a lifesaver in the beginning of breastfeeding Apple! I remember nursing the boys and having to go through the pain of the early feeding days. These worked tremendously for me with Apple! Helping speed along the healing and keeping my bra and nursing pads off the area that was sore.

The Moba baby bassinet...

Sunday, November 27, 2016

If you are looking for a contemporary moses basket the Moba is it! The best part is it will last for as many children as you want to have! The perfect construction and materials can help a dozen babies sleep if your heart desires that many! lol

This basket is so awesome! Unlike the rattan style bassinet's the Moba is stronger and more durable. The hypoallergenic plastic doesn't break down and creates a much better sleeping space. The nice high sides and smooth walls are wonderful for newborns and babies to lay inside safely. No need to worry about broken wicker poking baby! The plastic has breathable holes which allows maximum airflow. Airflow is important for your newborns sleeping space. The generous space for baby has good airflow and room if you choose to use wearable sleeping blankets.

Nick Jr Blaze and the Monster Machines & Shimmer and Shine...

Monday, November 21, 2016

I was compensated for attending this event sponsored by Nick Jr. and Mom.me. The thoughts and opinions below are my own

We were recently invited to a fun event put on by Nick Jr for Blaze and the Monster Machines and Shimmer and Shine. I jumped at the opportunity to attend and write about the event! Blaze is one of Kingsley's favorite shows on Nick Jr.! If you are not into the toddler years yet just wait, it happens fast. Your little ones will start recognizing their favorite characters and it will give mama a little quiet time when needed when the show is on.

On Sunday we packed up the kids including the big boys and headed to LA. Thankfully the drive was short and sweet because there was no traffic. We arrived at the Peterson Automotive Museum late morning and were in awe over the beautiful building.

Up we went to the roof top patio and I think Kingsley near fell over! It was Blaze and the Monster Machine heaven!! I was so excited too and elbowing Kurt to take note for Christmas gifts. LOL!

Kingsley enjoyed the Blaze motorized truck. It was his first time in a driving vehicle like that. It is a really good size and speed for older toddlers. You could easily keep up with a quick walk beside your little one. Another favorite was the track. We actually opened up the track before Christmas because he couldn't stop talking about it and bugging us to play with it. His brother Kaeden assembled it with him and I have so far gotten some wonderful hours of quiet time when he has been playing with it! I would say that is our favorite toy for sure!!

Here are some of the photo's from our fun filled day.

The family line up! Never easy to get them together for a photo.

Kingsley rocking the new Crazy 8 + KIDZ BOP collection...

Friday, November 18, 2016

We recently teamed up with Crazy 8 to show off their Crazy 8 + KIDZ BOP collection! King loves being the life of the party (just like his dad!) and what a perfect match for us! It's all about being a big star with huge potential!

KIDZ BOP has been named Billboard Magazines #1 kids artist for six consecutive years.

The Crazy 8+ KIDZ BOP collection has the coolest trends in mind from plaids, faux fur to sparkle and shine. It is all about being a big star!

Kingsley is rocking the Plaid blazer with rolled up sleeves for extra cool factor, the comfortable black sweats and finished off with the top hat and high top sneakers.

Your Life in Letters keepsake book...

Tuesday, November 8, 2016

I want to share one of my favourite finds from the ABC trade show I went to in October. If you are like so many of us mamas, you have the best intentions in world to keep a baby book. Often we have the sweet little newborn and as they nap we write down their schedules, dirty diapers, weight, when they first smile, when they roll over and then reality hits and the baby book gets lost in the mix of motherhood. We forget to write the day they got their first tooth or how many weeks they were when they first crawled and guilt sets in! Heck, some of us have another baby and the next doesn't even get past the first page of writing their name and birth weight!

Well, I met one smart mama named Brynne who came up with a baby book solution! It's called "Your life in Letters". A keepsake collection of once-a-year letters you write to your child from birth to age eighteen. This easy to use book only requires you to sit one time a year to pour your heart out to your child. There is a photo spot to add a picture of your little one (or big as they grow) and an envelope with a note inside ready to write on. You can add more if you feel the desire to write a longer letter. I do love the size of the paper because it doesn't feel overwhelming to fill out.

I am planning on starting the three smaller kids letters. I know that I won't have Kaeden and Kinglsey from birth but they will appreciate the years they get going forward.

Here is a tour of the kids playroom and family room. It really is just a cozy and fund space! The kids spend a lot of time hanging out in this room as it is off the kitchen. Our main part of the house is so formal so this fun pink and navy space is enjoyable and just happy to hang out in!

Shopping for Apple's clothes...

Sunday, September 25, 2016

I am linking some of my favourite Instagram and Etsy shops that I buy Apple's clothes from. I love the unique styles you can find from some amazingly talented people. It is so fun being able to create some unique items when small shops sew custom colour ways.

(Baby turban style hats that are soft, comfortable and fit much longer than the size says! They also run a preemie program by sending a hat in teeny size to preemies in the hospital.)

Comparing the Peg Perego Siesta and the Baby Bjorn high chair...

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

I have been asked a few times what high chair I recommend for babies. I have used many brands of chairs previously for my older boys and Kingsley. I can confidently say that Peg Perego is my favourite all around practical chair. I had purchased Peg Perego Prima Pappa's for each of the boys and it was always durable, comfortable, easy to roll around and overall a win. The new Siesta I got for Apple is perfect!

Apple loves her Joovy Spoon baby walker...

Monday, September 12, 2016

One of the differences of living in the US with Apple is being able to buy a baby walker! (Canada doesn't have them.) We love our Joovy Spoon walker!! I say "we" because I swear I love it as much as she does. We thankfully do not have any stairs in our house so she gets to cruise with freedom! She bascially runs in this walker.

Some of the features I love on our Joovy Spoon is the huge tray, padded seat, clean white colour (no ugly prints!), a removable washable tray if I give her snacks and it's roll is so smooth because of the high quality wheels!

I totally recommend the Joovy brand walker. After using it for over a month we have not had a single complaint!

They have a few colours to choose from but we wanted simple grey.

Tech savvy and baby gadgets for parents...

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Here are a few of the gadgets I am currently loving! I often wonder how I even managed without some of the cool inventions with my first son eighteen years ago!

Breastfeeding and drinking..

Friday, August 26, 2016

I get asked often about nursing and alcohol. This is again one of those personal choices mothers need to make for themselves. I don't say what I do is right but I often like to research and read a lot when I make choices. Of course this is one of the topics you'll see arguments for both sides.

Here are my thoughts..

Shape wear by Belly Bandit and my favourite underwire nursing bra ...

Friday, August 19, 2016

If you are like me and want a nice smooth look under your dresses and outfits you need to check out these shape wear pieces by Belly Bandit! I have tried many brands and can say the Belly Bandit brand fit is one of the best!! They aren't too tight, the material doesn't make me sweat and my shorties do not roll. If you are breastfeeding like me it is hard to find a slimmer tank that is easy to nurse in so this style made me so happy! You can also wear the nursing tank not nursing. (They do make a full coverage option but of course I just wanted the nursing one.)

Valid now through August 26 use code ModernM82016 to save 15%

I've linked the photo's for easy shopping!

The boys are off to school...

Monday, August 15, 2016

It has been a quiet week. The big boys are gone to school now and it is just Apple and I around the house. I am not going to lie, I love it! I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I loved homeschooling Kaeden (the fourteen yr old) for the first year. It was amazing to have my best friend at home with me. We truly enjoyed spending time together and little Kingsley always had his hero home to play with. Last year though the homeschool was a challenge, We were overrun with moving from Canada to USA, having a new baby, going back and forth to Canada and opening our corporate location for the future of our restaurant brand in California.

Homeschool can be amazing and I get asked often how we decided. I suggest finding a local based school so you will have a support team near and your children can interact with the other HS kids in the same curriculum. If you feel like you have a lot on your plate like I did last year I do not suggest adding school to that plate. It may go falling and smash to pieces! I felt like that by this spring.

Thankfully, we have two wonderful schools the boys are now attending. Kingsley had no trouble meeting new friends and getting to know all the teachers and principle. He is a perfect blend of his mommy and daddy's social side. LOL! Kaeden is doing amazing in his new high school. I couldn't be a prouder mom of that boy. He has never complained and goes with the flow. I truly love my Kade so much and seeing his positive outlook in milestones and moments confirms I am loving him right.

A few back to school pictures of course are needed!
(ps. sorry I don't do at school you get the ones laving the house for the safety of the boys. Like what mom wouldn't want to steal my perfect teen and possibly leave their monsters behind for me?)

Feeding baby with the Baby Breeza ...

Friday, August 12, 2016

First of all I must say life is crazy busy! I have been trying to get this post up for six weeks!! What do I feed my kids and how do I prep my baby food is a big question we have been getting asked since Apple started eating solids.

I am going to start by saying not all babies are the same! I know this first hand! Having had four kids I can tell you that each one has had different likes and dislikes and they all accepted food differently.

I will start with Braedy (the almost eighteen year old!) This boy could EAT! He still can eat! Pretty much was a food beast to start and at a few months old recognized meal time. He would grab at my plate or drool looking at anything people around him would put in their mouth. I started him just over four months on solids. (back then that was delayed feeding!) Since he was number one he got the special treatment. Slowly introducing a new food, monitoring his reactions, absolutely starting him on vegetables because what kind of bad mom would I be to give him fruit first?? He ate so well and life went on merrily!

Then Kaeden came along and it was time to feed this petite "mama's boy". I of course waited until six months because all the new books said this was recommended. We started on rice cereal and that was a great start. It was time to give him more so I cooked up a storm of baby food like I had with his older brother and gave him his first bite of the real deal. Veggies? wtf! That was his reaction!! No way would this boy open up for the healthy by the book foods. He was all about the perfectly warmed rice cereal with the sweet mixed store bought fruit layered on top dish. This is what he loved and I gave in.

Kingsley, was the adventurous one! He was ready to eat around five months but I waited until six. Avocado to start was the new way of feeding your baby and of course I wanted the best for his start to foods. I also had to make up for the bad parenting on the last child who lived off rice cereal and fruit. He loved the avocado..then easily accepted the nice steamed or roasted veggies.. of course gobbled all fruits .. then started on hot chicken wings at daddy's restaurant! I did say adventurous right. At least he did make a good clean start with avocado. At a year old Kingsley tried mussels at a nice restaurant we were out at and LOVED them. That became our go to when dining out if it was on the menu. You should see the looks you get when you pass your baby the plate of mussels they think you ordered for yourself!

Now miss Apple has come along and boy did that six months fly by. It was like I was bringing her home from the hospital and introducing solids. She wasn't a lover of foods to start because her addiction to milk is strong! It has been a struggle getting her to ear and avocado was a no-go for her first bite. We tried cereals and that did't work, then went to mixed foods and that helped a lot. If you want to hear a baby scream try and give them something they don't want. She can make the faces I didn't think were possible off things as easy as rice cereal. It has been a work in progress getting her to eat but this time I didn't worry. I knew she would come around eventually. Although, we did find out in Mexico she loves a perfectly cooked churro!

After having four kids, I now understand how important the flexibility of parenting and feeding them is. I went from doing things by the book and cooking all the baby food to store bought foods then to homemade everything and now in between. The thing that I can say is; they all turned out OK. Each child had a different start but around a year old when we got over the humps and they started to eat more and more regular people food. By toddler years they ate everything from sushi to Indian foods and all the healthy home prepped meals in between. The big boys even had the great experience of their breakfast cereal having added omega oils! (They gagged those bowls down for over a year!! hahaha!)

Here are a few of my recommended items when it comes to feeding baby.

I am not doing a recipe post as I think you can really create anything you want and can't go wrong if you blend foods you would eat together.
To address meats being added - I do not puree my baby's meat. I finely cut it up starting with chicken and turkey then on to other meats. This has helped introduce texture to foods and who wants to have meat ruining those nice vegetable and fruit blends?

The Cossato stroller...

Thursday, August 11, 2016

We just got back from a great little event for the launch of the double stroller in the USA for Cosatto. WOW!  Cosatto sure know how to create a beautiful party. From the food to the wonderful people and great products shown it was an all around success.

I have eyed up Cosatto strollers for a little now. I love my big strollers so much but to be honest there are those quick in and out trips I would love to have a light go-to. Oh, and the prints they also captured my eye!

Being a girl who has owned more strollers than I would like to admit I have always been picky about my umbrella style. They must have a good solid frame, proper handles with a good height, a reclining seat and premium quality fabric. Cosatto checked off each item on my list and some. They are so sturdy and push like a dream. The fabrics are beautiful and the hidden extras are such a bonus. They sold me at the iphone/ipad pocket built into the hood and speakers!

I have included some fun photos from the event and below showing all the features of the stroller we have. I can totally recommend them!

Getting your baby to sleep through the night in the crib...

Monday, August 1, 2016

Recently, I transitioned Apple from our bed to the crib. It is a bitter sweet achievement for my baby girl. She feels so young and tiny to be leaving my bed! I didn't push the older boys out so young but Apple was going down a path that was mixing our days and nights up badly. It really hit me a few weeks ago; I realized I was lacking sleep so badly and this was starting to affect my temper to Kurt and the boys, it was shortening my patience with everything.

Her sleep digression happened slowly from about three months old, she was increasing her feeds at night and waking more. Around that time the summer heat had started, our nursing sessions were shorter and less during the hot days and nights were a feeding party. Apple's health and weight gain were important to me and if she was getting most of her calories at night, then I was up for the late night feeds. I figured I could handle it until we adjusted to the hot days and she started eating solids.

Fast forward to her six month birthday; we started solids and at this stage were baby to boob more than five times a night! I became her pacifier and comfort, not her main nutrition source. It was time to part ways on our nights together. I knew the only way for this to work was for Apple to not be sniffing the source in bed with me.

So how did I transition girlfriend? Well, easily and not easily over a 3 day period. Thankfully, from the start we had done naps awake and I would start her in the crib before transferring her to the Dockatot to co-sleep after that first wake up. If you haven't ever put your baby in the crib or have always rocked, nursed or bottlefed them to sleep you will have a bigger habit to break. As a mom of four having gone through a lot of breaking habits (taking away soothers, bottles, crib to bed, etc) I can assure you that most only take a few days. You must have commitment though! Don't torture them for day one and two then give in on three and go back to old ways because it feels easier. Often day three or four are the game changer days! That is when you see a light shining at the end of the tunnel.

Boob maternity and nursing fall '16 picks...

Friday, July 29, 2016

If you have followed me before blogging days back when I owned retail you would have heard me talk about Boob. It was a brand that I sold in my store's in Canada that had great success. It fit all sizes of women so well! Most items Boob creates can be worn through pregnancy and then after for breastfeeding. I have picked out some of my favourite pieces from the newest fall collection. The best part of Boob is that you can wear them casual and dress most items up. The access flap also is nice and discreet when on!

Carmen and Apple's favourite things the last six months..

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

While traveling miss Apple has turned six months. I thought it would have broken my heart to have her half way to one year but it didn't. This is finally the first of my four babies that I am ok with growing up. Not that I want to rush it or anything! When the boys were young I would cry because they were growing too fast and now with Apple I don't stress. I think that it is because of all the different things I will get to enjoy with her when she is older. I honestly can't wait until she understands a girls day out, tea parties, dressing up and the million other girly things I have dreamed about.

Ever since Apple arrived I get questions daily on parenting advice or product questions. I'm often asked to write a post for all sorts of things. While I would love to write about everything I can't always find the time to do so. I try my best to get back to everyone's question's, with advice on gear, sleep and breastfeeding. I appreciate every darn single comment, question and compliment! More than anyone will know! But sometimes it can be overwhelming. The thing with all these social media outlets is they can consume a great part of my day and time. I could literally take eight hours a day answering messages! This can be challenging as I have started to work part-time with my husbands company and I really want to love on my beautiful baby more ad spend time with the boys before they leave to school.

Most people that do what I do have ads on their sites and take on sponsored posts or have links to make income. (they deserve it! It is HARD work!) However, I try not to take on too much and being so selective I pass on the income stream most times. I have talked about authenticity many times and how much it means to me! I want items I am using to make sense to me or to be something I would have purchased or do buy. Basically, I guess I am trying to find a balance between looking at blogging as a job or a hobby and how much effort and time I should be putting into it. That said, I much prefer the hobby side currently and working with a very selective few... Maybe when the kids are in school I will "work" on it more giving more product posts. For now, I will share when something stands out to me and when it feels right.  **I suggest following snapchat {carmenModernMom} for daily updated and lots of sharing of videos of life with kids. That is the easy and fun part of sharing tips, tricks, gear and family for me! It isn't as structured as Instagram, the website or Facebook.

OK! So now on to why you probably came over here! Of course I hate for my wealth of knowledge to go to waste! (Gosh, I spent years educating myself and others when I owned my children's stores it would be a shame not to write this. LOL!)

What were my most used items in the first six months?  I am going to link each item if you click the photo it should direct you to their site.

I already did items for postpartum so I will link that HERE is you didn't read.
